More ETC booths to be installed to reduce expressway traffic congestion -Highways Minister

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Johnston Fernando, Minister of Highways has stated that steps will be taken to construct new Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) booths at the expressways to reduce the heavy traffic congestion during office hours at the exit gates.

The Minister disclosed this during a meeting held at the Highways Ministry recently on the progress of the Expressway Operations Management Unit and its future plans.

ETCs are currently installed only at the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway and Minister Fernando instructed the Secretary to the Ministry to prepare the necessary plans for the installation of the ETCs at the Kerawalapitiya Interchange and other interchanges on other expressways in the future.

The Minister further said that steps should be taken to popularize the electronic payment system (prepaid card) ETC among the expressway users.

Secretary to the Ministry of Highways RWR Pemasiri, Director General of the Road Development Authority Sardha Weerakoon and Director of the Expressway Operations Management Unit were also present at the occasion.
