(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) –A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court has been appointed to hear fundamental rights petitions filed seeking to quash the Cabinet decision to transfer 40% of the government-owned shares of the Kerawalapitiya Yugadanavi Power Plant to U.S. Company New Fortress Energy.
The announcement was made when the petitions were taken up before a three-judge bench comprising Justices Murdu Fernando, Gamini Amarasekera and Arjuna Obeysekera today (26).
The Attorney General has earlier requested the Supreme Court to appoint a full bench of five or more judges to hear the fundamental rights petitions.
Accordingly, the petitions will be taken up before a five-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Buwaneka Aluvihare, Priyantha Jayawardena, Vijith Malalgoda and LTB Dehideniya on Monday (29).
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, the Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith and others have filed the fundamental rights petitions seeking to invalidate the cabinet decision.
