(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The Court of Appeal has ordered to grant bail and release lawyer Hejaaz Hizbullah who was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and in remand custody.
The order was issued by a two-judge bench comprising Justices Menaka Wijesundera and Neil Iddawela.
After considering a petition filed on behalf of Hejaaz Hizbullah requesting his release on bail, the Court of Appeal has ordered the Chilaw High Court to release the accused on bail.
When the petition was called recently, the Attorney General had stated in court that he had no objection to the bail application.
The Court of Appeal issued the order after considering the submissions made by President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva, who appeared for the petitioner, and the Attorney General.
Hizbullah was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on April 14, 2020 pursuant to the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) on charges of allegedly ‘aiding and abetting’ one of the suicide bombers involved in the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.
The Attorney General has charged the defendant in the Puttalam High Court of wrongdoing under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
