President’s office blames an unidentified extremist group for yesterday’s violent protest

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – A statement issued by the President’s Media Division says it has been revealed that an organized extremist group among the protesters who were protesting near the Jubilee Post in Nugegoda had behaved in a riotous manner and created a violent situation.

According to the President’s Media Division, the mob armed with iron clubs, sickles and clubs, had provoked the protesters and marched towards the President’s residence at Mirihana Pangiriwatta, causing a riot.

Many of those involved in the violence have been arrested and many have been identified as organized extremists, the statement said adding that they have spearheaded the protest calling for an Arab Spring in Sri Lanka.

Detainees have revealed that the riot was carried out using social media anonymously to provoke the people and destabilize the country, President’s Media Division said.
