(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – As it was reported that the fall armyworm caterpillars is spreading and damaging maize crops in several areas of Anuradhapura district, the Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera made a visit to inspect the maize crops in several areas of the district.
Along with a group of agriculture officials and agricultural development officials, the minister and officials observed some maize fields cultivated in the villages of Anuradhapura, Seeppukulam and Viruppankulam.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the import of maize has been completely suspended and the necessary work arrangements have been made to produce the maize needed in the country.
The Minister further stated that steps will be taken to provide necessary concessions to the farmers for maize cultivation.
Maize crops in Mihintale, Kahatagasdigiliya, Horowpothana, Galenbidunuwewa, Tirappane and Gambirigaswewa areas have been severely damaged by the fall armyworm caterpillar.
Observing the damage, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera instructed the officials to take immediate measures to control the spread of the caterpillar.
