Court dismisses former President Sirisena’s appeal to release him from Easter Sunday cases

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) –The Western Province High Court of Civil Appeals today ordered the dismissal of an appeal petition submitted by former President Maithripala Sirisena subject to a fee of Rs.21,000.

The former President has filed his petition requesting the Colombo Civil Appellate High Court to dismiss all the cases filed against him before the Colombo District Court by 109 families of those who were injured, permanently disabled and prejudiced by the Easter Sunday attack in April 2019 and to issue an order exonerating him from those cases that demand compensation for the victims.

The order was issued by the two-judge bench comprising Judges Sanjeewa Morayas and Frank Gunawardena.

The victims of the Easter Sunday attack have filed 108 cases before the Colombo District Court against former President Maithripala Sirisena and other officials for failing to take measures to prevent the Easter Sunday terror attack despite receiving sufficient intelligence prior to the attack.

The lawyers representing Mr. Sirisena submitted requests before the Colombo District Court to release former President from these cases.

But the Colombo District Court rejected the request made by Mr. Maithripala Sirisena and decided to continue the proceedings against him.

Former President had then filed the appeal petition before the Western Provincial High Court of Civil Appeals requesting the court to declare that decision of the Colombo District Court is against the law and issue an order to annul the lower court’s decision and release him from the lawsuits filed by the victims of the Easter Sunday attack.
