Iran, Sri Lanka discuss expanding bilateral interactions

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry who is on an official visit to Teheran met with his Iranian counterpart Minister Dr. Hossein Amir Abdollahian at the Iranian Foreign Ministry in Tehran Saturday.

They discussed on expanding bilateral interactions between the two countries as well as on regional and international issues, Minister Ali Sabry said on Twitter.

Iranian Foreign Minister Dr. Amir Abdollahian in a joint press briefing with Minister Ali Sabry said the two sides discussed a wide range of bilateral, regional, and international issues, including economic cooperation, trade and tourism development, and increasing cooperation in regional and international organizations.

He added that the two sides enjoy a common political will to expand cultural, tourism, scientific cooperation.

“We discussed the latest status of the previously signed documents between the two countries and also discussed agreements for signing more documents in the future,” he said.

The export of technical and engineering services, medical services and equipment, and new technologies in addition to cooperation in the fields of economy, tourism, and energy were among the issues of mutual interest between the Iranian and Sri Lankan diplomats, according to Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency.

According to Minister Amir-Abdollahian, the two sides also discussed the issue of Iranian and Sri Lankan prisoners.

Based on the agreements, the two sides agreed to take action regarding the release of prisoners in the two countries in a humane way in the near future.

He also said that the two sides stressed strengthening cooperation in the field of the fight against drug trafficking and human trafficking and other trafficking issues and trade ties.

Minister Ali Sabry is undertaking an official visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran from 04 – 07 August 2023, on an invitation from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran Dr. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

During the visit, the Minister is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on the Iranian President Dr. Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi and to hold meetings with the Iranian Foreign Minister Dr. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other senior government officials, with a view to further strengthening the close relations between the two countries.

Minister Sabry is also scheduled to deliver a speech at the Institute of Political and International Studies of Iran.
