Sanath Nishantha suspended from parliament for 2 weeks

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced today (22) that State Minister Sanath Nishantha has been suspended from parliament for a period of two weeks for his unruly behavior inside the Chambers on Tuesday.

Chaos broke out yesterday in parliament as ruling party parliamentarians protested opposition leader Sajith Premadasa making a statement during the budget debate regarding the apex court’s ruling that former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brothers are responsible for bankrupting the country

While the other ruling party parliamentarians were protesting the opposition leader’s statement, the State Minister Sanath Nishantha was seen taking away the opposition leader’s document containing his statement.

The Speaker then suspended the parliament sitting for brief period before reconvening to continue with the Second Reading of the 2024 Budget.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena communicated the decision to suspend Sanath Nishantha in Parliament after the Third Reading or the Committee Stage debate on the budget commenced this morning.
