Anti-drug operation ‘Yukthiya’ resumes after holidays

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) –  Sri Lanka Police says the special operation ‘Yukthiya’ will resume starting Wednesday (Dec.27) to crack down on drug peddling and organized crimes that have plagued the country.

Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the anti-drug operation could not be carried out over the past three days from December 24-26, as police personnel had to be deployed to special duties during the holidays.

As of December 25, under the ‘Yukthiya’ operation, a total of 13,666 drug suspects had been placed under arrest and 1,097 of them were sent for rehabilitation.

Large consignments of drugs including heroin, methamphetamine (‘Ice’) and cannabis have been impounded during the special raids, which kicked off on December 17, while ill-gotten assets worth millions of rupees owned by drug traffickers were confiscated.
