(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore marked the International Migrant Workers Day with two events, with the participation of the Sri Lankan migrant workers in Singapore.
The High Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Manpower of Singapore and other stakeholders celebrated International Migrant Workers Day at the official ceremony held on 17 December 2023. Senior Minister of State at the Ministry of Defence and Deputy Secretary General of the National Trade Union Congress of Singapore Heng Chee How graced the occasion as the Guest of Honor. The evening featured an enchanting performance by Sri Lankan female migrant workers.
Addressing the gathering, the Guest of Honour expressed gratitude for the vibrant cultural exchange and emphasized the importance of the role played by migrant workers in Singapore’s development. Capitalizing on the occasion, the High Commission set up a Sri Lankan booth to promote tourism and raise awareness on Sri Lankan products, culture, and diversity among the visitors.
The celebration continued on 18 December at the High Commission premises with the participation of Sri Lankan migrant workers.The Acting High Commissioner Ahamed Razee commended the contributions of the Sri Lankan migrant workers to Singapore’s nation-building process and Sri Lanka’s economic resurgence. He further stressed that the High Commission remained committed to extending the care and support for the Sri Lankan migrant workers. He stated that the High Commission is closely working with the Singaporean authorities to obtain more opportunities for Sri Lankans, which would be economically significant at this critical juncture.
Representing the Sri Lankan migrant worker community in Singapore, a few participants addressed the gathering and expressed their appreciation for the support and care extended by the High Commission.
