Only 1.2 Mn expat workers registered with SLBFE

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara said that only 1.2 million out of the three million Sri Lankan expatriate workforce have left for jobs after getting duly registered with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE).

He said that the vast majority of people who face many oppressive incidents in foreign countries travel abroad illegally without registering.

The Minister said this while speaking to the media yesterday (14) after visiting and receiving the blessings of Mahanayaka Thera’s of the Malwathu Asgiriya Chapters in Kandy.

The Minister further said that those going abroad for a job after getting duly registered with the SLBFE are entitled to insurance coverage and many other benefits.

“Some people go abroad on wrong means without following the existing laws and regulations and the ministry faces many problems in providing protection to them when in trouble,” he added.
