Sri Lankan government to import 20,000 MT of rice from Myanmar

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The government has received cabinet approval to import 20,000 metric tons of rice from Myanmar to meet the current need.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal made by the Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena to import 20,000 metric tons of rice from Myanmar on the basis of a Government to Government Agreement.

The rice stock would be imported through the State Trading (General) Corporation at a cost of US dollar 460 per metric ton.

The Cabinet on 24 September 2021 granted approval to import 100,000 metric tons of rice from Myanmar enabling to keep sufficient buffer stocks in order to maintain a safe stock of rice without any shortage in the country.
