Production of liquid milk in Eastern Province doubles in a year

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The Governor of Eastern Province Mrs. Anuradha Yahampath said that the daily production of liquid milk in the Province has increased to 164,000 liters.

At a special meeting held yesterday (9) at the Governor’s office in Trincomalee, the Governor said about a year ago, the production was only half of the current production and the daily milk production was increased due to more effective livestock management in the Province.

Model dairy farms have also been established the “Sustainable Dairy Farm” project at a cost of Rs. 52 million to reduce the damage caused by free roaming cattle in the Eastern Province.

Each model farm includes a biogas system, cattle shed, organic fertilizer production unit, land suitable for growing grass for cattle feed, and a rainwater harvesting unit.

In addition to this, the Provincial Department of Animal Production and Health has launched many special programs to involve other farmers in this new system by taking these sustainable dairy farms as an example.

Meanwhile, the model biogas plant at the government farm in Uppuveli, Trincomalee has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 32 million.

In addition, it was revealed in that a special method of genetic improvement of cattle has been started by the Provincial Department of Animal Production & Health to increase the liquid milk production capacity of the Province.
